Recognized as one of the leading providers of specialized paediatric and neonatal care in the Maldives, the department is dedicated to providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-based medical services for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents up to 16 years of age.

In November 2024, the Paediatric Emergency Room (ER) was established, further strengthening the hospital’s capacity to provide timely and advanced emergency care for children.

 

Clinical Team Composition

 The department is staffed by a highly experienced multidisciplinary team comprising:

  • General Paediatricians
  • Paediatric Neurologist
  • Paediatric Pulmonologist
  • Paediatric Cardiologist
  • Medical Officers
  • Dedicated Paediatric and Newborn Care Nurses

 

Overview of Paediatric Services

 Together, the team delivers comprehensive preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and critical care services across general and specialized paediatrics.

 

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Our NICU has 18 beds, including 2 observation beds, with an average of 80 neonatal admissions per month.

Located in both the Hiyala Wing and Dharumavantha Hospital (DH), the NICU provides advanced care for premature and critically ill newborns.

The smallest preterm managed and discharged home in good health was 500 grams, and the earliest gestational age managed was 23 weeks of age.

Paediatric Ward

The Paediatric Ward has 31 beds. With an average 170 admissions per month, the ward provides inpatient care for a wide range of acute and chronic paediatric conditions in a child-friendly environment.

Paediatric Emergency Room

The Paediatric Emergency Room has 11 beds, including a fully equipped resuscitation bed. With a structured Green, Yellow, and Red Zone triage system, we have an average of more than 100 emergency admissions per month.

Dedicated emergency and acute care services are provided for children from birth to 16 years.

 The department operates daily outpatient and subspecialty services, ensuring accessible and continuous care:

Advanced Diagnostic & Procedural Services

 The department offers comprehensive diagnostic and interventional services, including:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Electrocardiography (ECG)
  • Transthoracic & Transesophageal Echocardiography
  • Paediatric Bronchoscopy
  • Paediatric Pulmonary Function Test
  • Diagnosis and Immunotherapy for asthma and airway allergies in children

These advanced diagnostic capabilities enable early detection, precise evaluation, and effective management of complex paediatric conditions.

As a teaching hospital, Male city group of Hospitals, IGMH and DH also serve as an educational platform, with the Paediatrics Department actively providing medical education and clinical training to both interns and medical students, fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.

 

Support provided

The department provides support to public health authorities, including the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Ministry of Health (MoH). We offer extensive technical assistance in preventive programs, training initiatives, and healthcare management services, contributing to national child health strategies and capacity building.

We also do research, with already published papers.

With a strong focus on excellence, innovation, family-centered care, and medical education, the Paediatrics Department at IGMH continues to serve as a national referral center for paediatric and neonatal healthcare in the Maldives — ensuring that every child receives the highest standard of medical care from birth through adolescence.
