As a tertiary care referral center in the Maldives, the department supports a wide spectrum of clinical specialties with accurate, timely and high-quality imaging.

Led by a team of experienced consultant radiologists and supported by skilled radiographers and technical staff, the department is committed to excellence in patient care, innovation, and adherence to international standards in radiological practice.

Core Services

Diagnostic Imaging

The department provides a full range of diagnostic imaging services, including:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – 1.5T and 3.0TMRI
Advanced neuro, musculoskeletal, and body imaging with high-resolution protocols
  • Computed Tomography (CT) -128 slice CT and dual source CT
Multidetector CT for trauma, oncology, stroke imaging, and angiographic studies
  • Ultrasound (US)
Real-time imaging including abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, vascular, and small parts
  • Digital Radiography (X-Ray)
Routine and emergency imaging with optimized radiation dose, C-arm imaging in Operation theatres – for intraoperative imaging, Cone beam CT for dental and maxillofacial imaging.
  • Mammography –  D Mammography/breast tomosynthesis.
Breast cancer screening and diagnostic evaluation
  • Bone densitometry
  • Fluoroscopy

Interventional Radiology

Currently limited services however basic image-guided minimally invasive procedures are being done, including:

  • Ultrasound and CT-guided biopsies
  • Ultrasound guided hook-wire localisation
  • Abscess and fluid drainage procedures

These services aim to reduce surgical burden, hospital stay, and patient morbidity.

Support & Infrastructure

  • 24/7 emergency imaging services
  • PACS & RIS systems for efficient workflow, reporting, and image storage
  • Radiation safety badges for radiation safety of staff and radiation safety protocols aligned with ALARA and international standards
  • Dedicated Ultrasound clinic in Villimale hospital - contributes weekly for OPD ultrasounds.
  • Radiation safety protocols aligned with international standards
  • Continuous quality assurance and audit programs within the hospital for radiation protection and patient safety

Department Overview

The Radiology Department functions with a strong focus on:

  • Clinical integration – active participation in multidisciplinary meetings with regular contribution to the hospital tumour board
  • Awareness programs ; actively participates in breast cancer screening programs , cancer awareness sessions and active involvement in public health care forums
  • Rapid turnaround times for emergency and inpatient imaging
  • Training and education of radiology staff and allied healthcare professionals and  regular interdepartment CME with department of Obstetric & Gynecology
  • Standardized imaging protocols for consistency and quality
  • Patient-centered care ensuring comfort, privacy, and safety

The department continues to evolve with advancements in imaging technology and aims to develop into a center of excellence for diagnostic and interventional radiology in the Maldives.
